João Candido Portinari
Holds degrees in Mathématiques Supérieures (1959) and Mathématiques Spéciales (1960) from the Lycée Louis-Le-Grand de Paris. Graduated as Telecommunications Civil Engineer from the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Paris (1963). Earned his Masters and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (1966).
After many years living abroad, he returned to Brazil in 1966 at the invitation of the Pontifical Catholic University do Rio de Janeiro. He was a founder of the Mathematics Department at PUC-Rio and was Department Head from 1968 to 1970.
In 1979 he envisioned and implemented the Portinari Project, and since then he has dedicated his time to leading all its efforts and achievements as Founder and Executive Director.

Maria Edina Portinari
Holds a Law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC - Rio). She specializes in Intellectual Property, working in the areas of Copyright, Licensing, Entertainment Law and Industrial Property. She was partner and attorney with Dannemann Siemsen Law Firm from 1989 to 2008 and founded the Portinari, Tiedemann Barreto Law Firm.
In the academic world, she was Professor of Copyright in the Intellectual Property Advanced Studies program. Today’s World and Challenges, at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV/RJ), in 2003; at the Higher School of Law (OAB/SP), between 2009 and 2012; at the Higher School of Legal Administration of Rio de Janeiro State (ESAJ); and she has also been guest lecturer in a variety of institutions and associations. She co-wrote the book Commentaries on Industrial Property Law – Renovar Publishing House (2005), and was guest lecturer at the Higher School of Legal Administrative (ESAJ) in 2009.
She has provided Legal Counsel to the Portinari Project since 1980.
