Portinari gave the owner a painting, Night of Saint John's Festival, that depicted a boy chasing a balloon; it fell and the canvas was torn. Portinari suggested it be repaired at the Escola de Belas Artes, after which he could retouch it. The owner and Portinari spent five years trying to meet again, but their travels prevented them from doing so. When at last he when to retrieve the painting at the atelier, it had been purchased by Americans. To remedy the situation, Portinari painted Scarecrow.
