Title
Portrait of José Martins de Barros
Description
Composition in gray, green, earthy, ochre, orange, black and white. Smooth, thick texture in some regions and marked brushstrokes. Portrait almost full body man, already old, against background with farm lanscape seeing plantation, cattle, mill and part of some buildings. The pictured is standing, facing slightly back to the left. It has elongated face with skin marked by wrinkles and tanned by the sun; gray hair divided on the left, broad forehead, visibly large on the left ear, small eyes and funds facing down and to the left, slightly hooked nose great, straight mustache, thin and closed lips and chin straight. wears lead-gray suit with white shirt, black tie with lists diagonally and scarf tip out of his jacket pocket. On the right arm along the body with hand a little disproportionate, dark and obscure. On the left arm slightly bent with hand in trouser pocket which makes the jacket is pleated and only one of two same buttons are buttoned. The depicted seems to be standing on a balcony which means that what you see in the background is in lower plane. Nearest pictured is seen across the entire width of the composition, the lean-to of a roof of colonial tiles in dark tone. More back and on the left, high iron frame with mill on the edge, wood logs scattered on the floor and some buildings. On the right small house with open window on the right next white horse; further to the right, cattle and approximately suggesting group pen. Completing the lanscape, large coffee plantation in undulating terrain with dirt track through the plantation road toward the horizon. On the right five people just outlined working closely with coffee trees in the front row of the plantation. Line of well-defined horizon. Sky gray-green tone with stains suggesting clouds.
