Historical Info
Seeing this portrait at the Salão Revolucionário of 1931, Mário de Andrade took note of Portinari’s painting for the first time, as he recounted years later in a newspaper article: "[...] 'The Violinist' was already an admirable work, with its composition and extraordinary strength of design; I was swept up in enthusiasm. [...] In it there was an interior ‘need’ impossible to confuse with a taste for novelty or search for originality, and I believed in the painter unconditionally..." [LV 29, p. 9-10].
