Historical Info
The sitter, Victorio Gregolini, was one of the artists who worked on the façade of the mother church in Brodowski, whose construction began in 1909. He was one of the first people to encourage Portinari, teaching him painting basics and guiding him in his work on the church’s altar. This was Portinari’s first exposure to the painter’s trade: "... they brought the drawing and I helped them. I filled the background with stars, but what they were most interested in was that I would get there at six in the morning and open the church door. Then, from a container that held maybe twenty liters, I poured out five liters of water and mixed it with some glue. I gathered some kindling and built a fire on four bricks where I would melt the glue. Then, on a board about 100 x 70 cm, I mixed the powdered paints with water and covered each color with a damp cloth. The scaffolding was rickety – eight or ten meters high and made out of round sticks – and I almost fell off a bunch of times..." [LV 5, p.50].
