Historical Info
Transcript of the only known reference to this work: "Portinari’s sketch, ‘The Swan Song,’ based on the Tolstoy novel, symbolizes the life of an artist as seen by the restless soul of a visionary mystic. A dying violinist, standing in the snow, squeezes the final notes from his instrument. In sinister accompaniment, the icy mists and whistling gusts of wind create a strange, unreal environment, brimming with gentle mystery and infinite poetry. Profound human compassion envelops the miserable, pathetic skeleton, while the spirit soars high in the ethereal realm of dream and beauty..." [PR 24].
