In 1936 Portinari was invited by Gustavo Capanema to decorate the building of the then Ministry of Education and Health, probably on the advice of Lúcio Costa.
Currently known as Palácio Gustavo Capanema, it is the first building in a modern style, having been designed by a team of architects led by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. The Brazilian team received the first instructions for construction from the French architect Le Corbusier.
