description
"In 1940, the director of the North American Library of Congress, the poet Archibald MacLeish, invited Portinari to create an emblematic work of Latin American art. The following year, the painter embarked for the United States, where he executed the murals Descobrimento, Clearing the Forest, Catechesis and Discovering Gold. Highlighting workers, indigenous people and popular figures, Portinari brought together symbols of Brazil's colonization, which also represent the destiny of its neighboring lands, unified by the impact of the arrival of Portuguese and Spanish people in the New World. In 1941, the artist wrote to a friend that this was his capolavoro, his masterpiece, the best work he had done so far. (Portinari para Todos, exhibition catalogue, p. 53)
