Portinari Expedition on Brazilian Rivers

1999

In 1999, the exhibition 'Portinari's Brazil' visited the riverside populations of the Pantanal in Mato Grosso for a week. The 'Portinari Expedition on Brazilian Rivers' sailed down the Paraguay River, covering 1,200 kilometers up one bank and down the other, aboard a chalana belonging to the Mato Grosso do Sul State Military Police.

The replicas were assembled on top of the boat. The only cities visited were Porto Murtinho and Corumbá, each at one end of the river. The other towns where the exhibition was shown were small riverside villages, made up of a few houses and a school. The children had the opportunity to get on the boat and take part in the same activities offered by the project in the other towns, since the exhibition was always divided into two phases: the guided tour and the fun activities and games for the children, as a complement to the exhibition.
