In 1997, the first 'Portinari: Retrospective' exhibition was held at the Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum of São Paulo (Masp) to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
Several works that had never been exhibited were shown, such as the famous Baile na Roça (Ball on a Farm) - Portinari's first work with a Brazilian motif. After disappearing for almost sixty years, this work was one of the first of unknown whereabouts found by the Portinari Project.
