Description
Composition in ochre, green, gray, earthy and blue tones. Smooth and thick texture with marked brushstrokes. It depicts Father Anchieta kneeling on the sands of a beach with the sea behind him. Anchieta is in the foreground, center, front, kneeling on the right leg, with the left one bent with the foot flat on the sand. He wears a dark cassock, hs head is bent forward, facial features are suggested and his hair is cut in a tonsure. His right arm is stretched down, holding the a vertical batton which suggests he is writing in the sand; the left arm is bent with the elbow supported on his knee and hand on his face. Area representing sand defined by quadrangular forms filled diagonally by light parallel lines in light tones. In the background, there is an area suggesting the sea with loose brushstrokes reminiscent of waves crashing. There is no clear boundary between sea and sky. In the upper right half, a circular shape suggests the sun or moon.
