At the request of the Commission for the works of the Mother Church of Batatais, Portinari painted a set of paintings for the side chapels and the nave of the Mother Church of Bom Jesus da Cana Verde, where he was baptized. With great commitment, he personally monitored the works to install these paintings in niches specially designed to receive them. After his death, the main altar was renovated and the original moldings were replaced by a cement and granite niche.
The set corresponds to fourteen paintings representing the Way of the Cross, the only examples actually listed, as well as five paintings of Bom Jesus da Cana Verde, four of Our Lady of Aparecida and five invoking biblical scenes.
