Northeastern influence in Portinari's work on display at Caixa Cultural Fortaleza and Salvador

2024

The exhibition Portinari: between Traces and Words (2024) brought together 28 original prints by the artist, revealing the connection between Brazilian literature and the Northeastern influences in the work of one of Brazil's greatest visual artists.

The public can see portraits, Christmas cards and striking illustrations for literary works by Machado de Assis and José Lins do Rego, among others. In addition to the works of art, the exhibition explored Portinari's personal relationships with important literary figures from the Northeast, such as Rachel de Queiroz, Jorge Amado and Graciliano Ramos, through records and documents that reveal the depth of this contact.

Sponsored by Caixa Econômica Federal and the Federal Government, the exhibition had free admission and free classification. It was held at CAIXA Cultural Fortaleza between May 21 and July 28 and at CAIXA Cultural Salvador between August 13 and October 20. It received more than 10,000 visitors and around 70 art education activities per exhibition in partnership with educational institutions and cultural associations.
